Yet the UN system and democracies appear increasingly paralyzed—trapped in vetoes, geopolitical rivalries, and hollow declarations—offering gestures of concern instead of enforcing accountability, which is desperately needed.
I recently spoke with Dimitris Eleas, a political scientist, writer, and independent researcher, on my podcast, discussing the human impact of global wars and violence. As Dimitris poignantly observes, the poor, the children, and women are those who suffer the most.

Dimitris Eleas is a New York City–based political scientist, writer, and independent researcher. His work explores the role of personality in the social-historical, philosophy, global politics, antisemitism, and modern history, with a particular focus on the Holocaust.
He has written a plethora of articles, and his writing has appeared several times in the letters sections of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post.
Dimitris Eleas supports the democratic ideals of Israel and the Jewish people. He believes in civil liberties, and that all people deserve a decent income, quality food, clean water and air, and equal human rights. He strongly opposes wars, because in the end it is always the poor, their children, and the workers who pay the price of every war.
He has published several books in Athens, and is the author of the novel-essay When Shakespeare Was Lost, 1585–1592, published in 2025 by Govostis Publishers (Est. 1926).
He is currently developing his long-term project, the novel-essay The Black Birds of Warsaw.
Thanks to the heartless Trump, children in Cuba are dying because hospitals cannot access essential medicines and medical supplies, according to a warning from UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. As sanctions and fuel restrictions tighten under the Trump administration, the humanitarian situation on the island continues to deteriorate. Infant mortality has reportedly doubled, childhood cancer survival rates have fallen significantly, and access to life-saving medicines has dropped to critically low levels. Families are enduring prolonged blackouts, food shortages, and growing barriers to healthcare. No child should lose their life because medicine is unavailable. Political disputes must never come at the expense of basic human rights and human dignity. Why is the Secretary of State Marco Rubio silent about this travesty? He must act now to ensure that Cuban civilians, especially children, are protected from policies that cause horrific, widespread humanitarian suffering.

Gun violence remains one of the most urgent human rights challenges in the United States. Nearly 40,000 people lose their lives to gun violence every year, while more than 130,000 others survive gunshot wounds that often leave lasting physical and emotional scars. The burden falls disproportionately on communities of color, with Black Americans facing significantly higher rates of gun homicide. We are not advocating the disposal of firearms, but what we are saying is that addressing this crisis requires more than enforcement alone. What is needed are comprehensive background checks, safe-storage laws, community violence intervention programs, mental health support, and responsible firearm regulations that can save lives. Every person has the right to live in safety and dignity. Protecting that right demands sustained action, investment, and political will.

If you truly interested in reducing violent crime, you would trying to increase mental health services in our communities and stop concentrating on inanimate objects (guns). We could stress to our politicians to remove illegal aliens and secure our borders. Guns don’t create violence, people do and we need to hold violent perpetrators accountable for their actions. Guns are only used in a very small percentage of violent crimes.
88% of all crimes involving a firearm are committed by someone not legally allowed to possess a firearm. Gun regulation should target those people. Gun regulations should not infringe on the Constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens because of those few bad apples.

A recent investigation by Al Jazeera has renewed attention to allegations of enforced disappearances in Ecuador during military operations carried out as part of the government's anti-crime campaign. According to officials cited in the report, 51 people have reportedly disappeared since early 2024, while dozens of investigations remain ongoing. Families continue to demand truth, accountability, and justice as they search for loved ones who vanished after encounters with security forces. The fight against organized crime is essential, but it must never come at the expense of due process, transparency, and fundamental human rights.
